Plymouth Argyle FC - 2026/27 Preview and Predictions

Reviewing 2025/26

My tip to finish second in 2025/26. They'd just come down from the Championship but held on to the bulk of their squad and had put up some half decent pre season showings. They then lose the first four league games and sit bottom in late August. It's amazing how much a poor start can hold you back.

From November onwards they were putting in automatic promotion figures and lost just one of their last twelve games, missing out on the play offs on the final day after both Luton and Stevenage scored added time winners to leap frog them.

Looking ahead to 2026/27

Only the two automatically promoted teams, Lincoln and Cardiff, picked up more points than Argyle from December onwards last season. The bookies expect another promotion push this time out and they have a strong squad and a young but talented manager in Tom Cleverly.

It will have been disappointing but inevitable to see one of last seasons top scorers Lorent Tolaj being snapped up by Bristol City. However, the £4.7m transfer fee will no doubt have softended the blow and should enable the club to add a couple of players in order to sustain a push towards the Championship.

Court Offside Tip

The vibe around Home Park is still positive and the club are certainly not planning on sticking around in League One for too long. I don't think they quite have enough to go up automatically this season but they'll be in the mix for a play off spot and in my opinion 11/10 will yield a nice return on investment.
