Wigan Athletic FC - 2026/27 Preview and Predictions

Reviewing 2025/26

Wigan's rise through the leagues was arguably the best effort since Wimbledon back in the 1980's, reaching the Premier League and even beating Arsenal over two legs to reach the League Cup Final. However, you always looked and wondered how they could sustain it. They barely filled the stadium for the biggest of games and anything less than a top 4 team produced 70% attendances at best.

Their fall back through the leagues is a sorry sight to see and despite finishing 16th in 25/26, they were in real trouble in mid February. It's fair to say that had it not been for Joe Taylor's 15 goals, they might have been staring League Two full in the face.

Looking ahead to 2026/27

The bookies have Wigan finishing closer to the bottom than the top of League One next season, and whilst I agree, there are definitely things to be positive about. Gary Caldwell is in charge for the first full season and after the leels of over achieving he was able to bring out of Exeter City, Latics fans will be hopeful he can produce some similar magic this season.

Sam Tickle has left to join Bristol City and the club will miss him between the sticks. Joe Walsh comes in on loan from QPR as cover, and the additions of Ryan Trevitt and Sonny Perkins are particularly strong signings at this level. The return of Max Power will certainly be to Wigan's gain and Bradford's loss.

Court Offside Tip

I have Wigan surviving relegation by just one place this season and as such it would be rude not to take a look at their odds for the drop. 9/2! Ok, I've predicted them to stay up. But, at 9/2 you give yourself a great cash out opportunity if things really do go pear shaped. I'll be investing and hoping for a decent cash in the second half of the season.
